The impact of what we said is unimaginable. Do you realize that sometimes, someone uses the negativity to forge a new friendship? Although we all know that making new friends in a new place is not that easy, yet sharing an antipathy to bond with someone gives you some unconscious bad reputation. People around you tend to believe your negative words than your positive words. Moreover, in our social norms, people who say positive things—only if it’s honest—about others is easier to get acceptance and people more likely to feel comfortable around them.
Yet how to differ a negative honest opinion or negative gossip? Technically, any sharing unsubstantiated information can be gossip. Both can be hurtful but if a negative honest opinion is told with sincere and constructive manners, it’s totally different.
We have to be careful about our choice of words and how we deliver it. Taking a role in gossip is the death of everything that it divides your beneficial community.
How to break the cycle? Try to listen more about “why” they are talking about that instead of “what” they are talking about. If you know the case, you can turn it around by saying something neutral or even positive to help them get a new a perspective. Spread the good word-of-mouth. Yet, if you know nothing about the case, just avoid the gossip-mongers and choose your friends wisely to keep your reputation clean. Share your private life only to your trusted friends.
As you already knew, word-of-mouth marketing is an incredible reputation tool. It’s one of the most trusted forms of advertising and an excellent way to build and support a great reputation online and offline. Nielsen reports that 92% of the consumer worldwide trust earned media like word-of-mouth or recommendations above all other forms of advertising. Isn’t that amazing? It goes the same with your own personal marketing. Your words are more powerful than swords.
However, what if the gossip is about you? Confront them and prove to them that they are wrong. Don’t worry, sooner or later, the truth will prevail.
