Yet how to differ a negative honest opinion or negative gossip? Technically, any sharing unsubstantiated information can be gossip. Both can be hurtful but if a negative honest opinion is told with sincere and constructive manners, it’s totally different.

We have to be careful about our choice of words and how we deliver it. Taking a role in gossip is the death of everything that it divides your beneficial community.

How to break the cycle? Try to listen more about “why” they are talking about that instead of “what” they are talking about. If you know the case, you can turn it around by saying something neutral or even positive to help them get a new a perspective. Spread the good word-of-mouth. Yet, if you know nothing about the case, just avoid the gossip-mongers and choose your friends wisely to keep your reputation clean. Share your private life only to your trusted friends.
